Redskins select James Madison DB Jimmy Moreland in seventh round

The Washington Redskins used their first of two picks in the seventh round of the 2019 NFL draft on James Madison defensive back Jimmy Moreland.

Madison is a lighter defender at 5’10” and 179 pounds who was a favorite of the pre-draft process for his small-school upside.

The Draft Network wrote the following about his skill set: “Superb ball skills, natural at tracking the ball in the air and he plays tougher than you’d expect. Now, he’ll get bodied by big dudes on the boundary but slipping him into the nickel, with safety help over the top? Moreland can be a real asset to a team and his general play-making can be highlighted here.”

The Redskins, like most teams, are always in the market for high-upside players who can perfect a niche role. If they succeed while coming off the board late in the process, that just means a front office is maximizing its value.

For the Redskins, the hope is Moreland turns out to be that guy and solves an issue.
