While all of the talk surrounding the Washington Redskins has been about who they will start at quarterback for the 2019 season, there is an arguably much more difficult decision to make in the backfield.
The Redskins have an embarrassment of riches at the running back position. Veteran all-pro Adrian Peterson has signed on for another year with the team, and the anticipation for second-year Derrius Guice will finally come to a head after an injury derailed his rookie season. Washington also has Chris Thomspon available for deployment when need be, and rookie Bryce Love is waiting in the wing while he recovers from a torn ACL. Throw in Samaje Perine, and the RB depth chart is set.
So how do you divvy up carries between the lot? Is there a chance that the depth and ability could be detrimental?
“It’s upped our game,” said running backs coach Randy Jordan, via Redskins.com. “Those guys get a little bit upset when all of the sudden a guy gets a couple of reps and they’re looking at me like, ‘Coach when is my turn?’ It makes it easy to coach when you’ve got a good room like that.”
It’s not a bad problem to have, but competition for the top spot in the backfield will possibly overshadow the same decision between Dwayne Haskins and Case Keenum. If the level of production rises enough, there is no wrong choice for the coaches to make.
