Redskins’ running back depth will prove crucial to team success

The Washington Redskins have many mixed expectations for the 2019 season. On the one hand, fans think that a successful NFL Draft and offseason has them in a position to make a run at the playoffs right away, but NFL pundits are saying otherwise.

One positive sign for the Redskins is their strength and depth in the backfield, and how that has translated to wins in the past.

In 2018, Washington went 6-1 in games where they outrushed their opponent, according to the Washington Post. With veteran all-pro Adrian Peterson leading the way, the Redskins were able to resort to a ground-and-pound type of mentality while taking the ball out of the quarterback’s hands.

Now, add in a healthy Derrius Guice and a hopefully revitalized offensive line, and Washington should be able to lean on the run game once again.

The depth chart for the Redskins RBs reads like a book. At the top are the aforementioned AP and Guice, but filling out the minor roles are Chris Thompson, Samaje Perine, and Byron Marshall. Washington also has former Heisman runner-up Bryce Love in the waiting while he recovers from an ACL tear suffered last year.

“If everybody is healthy come August and September, the coaches definitely have a tough job on their hands with what to do with everybody,” Thompson said. “If you look at the lineup, to me, it’s ridiculous.”

Sure, you can look at it as a tough decision to make when thinking about who will start, but it’s a tough decision that any coach in the league would love to have.
