Redskins roll dice on Duke QB Daniel Jones in updated mock draft

The idea the Washington Redskins will take a quarterback in the 2019 NFL draft isn’t so outlandish.

Those Redskins, after all, have to think about life without Alex Smith, which leaves them looking at Colt McCoy and others as possible starters.

Unless they grab a prospect like Daniel Jones in the upcoming draft.

Luke Easterling of Draft Wire has the Redskins doing just that in a new mock:

12. Washington Redskins (from GB)* | Daniel Jones | QB | Duke

It’s hard to imagine Alex Smith being ready to play at any point in 2019, and there’s nothing currently on the roster that screams starting-caliber NFL quarterback. Don’t be surprised if they make a move, even just a few slots in return for swapping third-and-fourth-round picks, to secure a raw but promising passer like Jones to build around.

In the second round, the same mock has the Redskins taking Deebo Samuel out of South Carolina.

Call it a critical one-two punch the Redskins could really use moving forward given the injury at quarterback and the sheer lack of production at wide receiver.

As a bonus, this isn’t the first time mocks have decided Jones is the perfect fit for the Redskins.

Jones isn’t a big name, but he is coming off a season in which he threw for 2,674 yards and 22 touchdowns, flashing first-round traits that will have him off the board early.
