Redskins release LB Mason Foster one day before training camp starts

Just a day before training camp kicks off, the Washington Redskins are making a rather sizable roster move.

According to CNN’s Erin Hawksworth, the Redskins have informed linebacker Mason Foster that he will be released. The move was confirmed by NBC Sports’ JP Finlay.

The move comes as a surprise, especially after ILB Reuben Foster went down with a season-ending injury on the first day of spring camp this year. The Redskins signed Jon Bostic to take his place, but now it seems that they will have another hole in the middle of the defense to fill.

In our recent 53-man roster prediction ahead of training camp, we had Foster pegged as a starter, while players like Shaun Dion Hamilton or Cole Holcomb served in a backup role with a chance to get more playing time. With Foster gone, it looks like the Redskins plan to lean on their younger additions to shore up the defense.
