Redskins RB coach challenging Derrius Guice to study Saquon Barkley, Alvin Kamara and others

Washington Redskins running backs coach Randy Jordan wants Derrius Guice to look at some of the best names in the NFL for inspiration.

And in time, he wants Guice to become one of those backs up-and-coming players study.

Johnson touched on this dynamic while chatting about Guice’s comeback trail and what they are working on together, via the team’s official website:

“I see him coming and in and rehabbing, and you know you see his workouts on Twitter and social media and I told him, and I challenged him, and I said ‘Hey, look man you have these guys like [Saquon] Barkley, and [Alvin] Kamara, [Christian] McCaffrey, and so forth and so on, you know study their game.’ That’s what we do, we go and study other people’s games. I’m looking at Ezekiel [Elliot] right now and I want guys for next year when the season is over for other coaches to look at their tape. They look at your tape and go, ‘Man this guy Guice man, he’s all about boom boom boom.’ So you know, I put that challenge out to him and I think he’ll accept it.”

Not a bad idea to tell a running back like Guice to watch names like Saquon Barkley, Alvin Kamara and Christian McCaffrey. A sledgehammer of sorts, Guice certainly has the moldable traits that could make him an every-down back quickly.

Granted, the focus, for now, is on the recovery, which Guice says is right on track.

Jordan can’t complain either way though, not when it looks like he’ll have Guice, Chris Thompson and Adrian Peterson at his disposal next season, provided the team can get the veteran Peterson back on a new deal.

Provided all goes well with the recovery and he can ease back into things, Guice studying the guys Jordan has outlined can only help — and in theory, it won’t take long before he’s one of the other backs coaches around the league use as a teaching example.
