The Washington Redskins drafted Terry McLaurin in 2019, grabbing a quick-twitch speedster who is liable to take the top off the defense and beat you on a deep route before you know what’s happened.
The problem is, their offense may not be best suited for that type of play-style.
With Dwayne Haskins at the helm, being backed up by Kyle Allen, the strong-suit for the Redskins is more towards the middle of the field, and out on the edges, while Haskins builds his arm-strength and confidence in the NFL up. Over at USA TODAY’s Touchdown Wire, they went through the worst NFL QB’s when it came to throwing the deep ball, and unfortunately, Washington’s QB room as a whole was on the list.
We’re suspecting it won’t be “Bombs Away!” in the nation’s capital until Dwayne Haskins and new backup Kyle Allen get their deep throws together. Last season, among quarterbacks taking at least 20% of their teams’ snaps, Allen posted a league-worst passer rating of 35.0 on throws of 20 or more air yards as Cam Newton’s replacement for the Panthers, and Haskins posted the second-worst at 41.4. Combined touchdowns: 1. Combined interceptions: Five. Combined completion percentage (20 completions on 81 attempts): 24.7%. Not good.
Of course, as two young quarterbacks who are cracking their way into the league, you can’t expect them to have finely tuned their long-balls just yet, but it is definitely something to keep an eye on as the 2020 season progresses.
