Redskins’ Preston Smith to sign with Packers

While the Washington Redskins got a win with the agreement with Landon Collins, one of their other players got away.

Preston Smith, a Redskins second-round pick in 2015, will sign with the Green Bay Packers, according to MMQB’s Albert Breer.

It’s a four-year deal for Smith, who at 26 years old has 24.5 sacks to his name.

Sack totals aside (he did have eight apiece in two of his four seasons), Smith created consistent pressure off the edge and the Redskins were going to have a hard time competing with open-market prices — even more so after the Collins deal.

For the Redskins, it’s clear they wanted a surefire safety and think they can get back some of this lost pass-rushing production in either free agency or the draft.
