One advanced stat illustrates Redskins’ need at WR

The Washington Redskins need help at wide receiver. There isn’t much of a debate on that.

What’s interesting is looking at the problem through advanced metrics. Their yards per route run in 2018, for example, presents a staggering argument:

While more goes into this than just the position, it reinforces the idea Redskins wideouts had problems creating separation and gaining yards after the catch.

The Redskins tried to fix this last year with the signing of Paul Richardson and waiting on the development of Josh Doctson. Neither caught more than 44 passes last year.

The offense as a whole was slow to get started under Alex Smith before his injury, and the playcalling wasn’t great, either. But wideouts who can create before and after the catch would have helped things along.

With the quarterback situation more dire than before, the Redskins might have to address the position again. While some promising prospects like Trey Quinn and Cam Sims have flashed, the need for instant production could force the team’s hand.
