Redskins name ex-Giant Ereck Flowers their starting guard

In some of the best news the New York Giants have received all summer, Ereck Flowers has been named the starting left guard of the Washington Redskins. At least for now.

Although he hardly seemed confident in the statement, Redskins head coach Jay Gruden informed reporters on Tuesday that based on how the depth chart sits, the Giants’ former first-round pick leads the way.

“Right now, Ereck Flowers is the left guard,” Gruden told reporters. “Wes Martin is going to get a lot of reps in this game coming up. He’s done a good job learning the offense and coming in as a rookie, he’s done a lot of good things. We have some other guys competing as well, but right now that’s where we’re going.”

A long-time tackle, the Redskins converted Flowers to guard earlier this summer and the experiment has gone about as well as anyone might have expected.

Flowers has showed some improvement at times, flashing a little talent here and there, but the Giants and their fans know that story all too well.

We’ll see if Gruden and the Redskins stick with Flowers in that spot following their Thursday night preseason finale, but at least for now, the Giants’ pass rushers and interior d-linemen are slated to square off against Flowers twice this season.
