Redskins have the No. 1 back-up QB situation in the NFL

Make sure you read this sentence a couple of times to let it really sink in: The Washington Redskins are getting praised for their front office moves in the NFL Media.

Fans are still justified in firing off their #FireBruceAllen tweets, but they’d be smart to admit at the same time that Allen and Co. have done a pretty good job this offseason when it comes to setting up the team to win in the future, and possibly the present as well.

It all starts with the quarterback, and Bleacher Report thinks that the Redskins have the No. 1 backup quarterback situation in the league. This is not to say that Washington’s starting QB situation is even remotely trustable, but when it comes to the depth at the position, the Redskins can feel alright.

Assuming Haskins wins the starting job, Keenum is a top-of-the-line No. 2 who was the league’s seventh-highest-rated passer in 2017 and completed 62.3 percent of his passes as a starter in Denver last season.

Ditto for McCoy, who has a 93.6 passer rating in his four years as a backup in Washington. The 32-year-old is also recovering from a broken leg, which is probably why they traded for Keenum, but NBC Sports Washington’s JP Finlay reported the Redskins coaching staff is not counting McCoy out in the quarterback competition that is sure to take place during training camp.

Of course, should the starting nod be reversed, and Keenum find himself under center Week 1, Haskins now becomes one of the most anticipated starts of the year, unless of course, Keenum leads the team on a playoff run, which fans would be thrilled with.

It’s got to be a strange feeling for this franchise to be receiving an atta-boy for roster moves, but Washington deserves the praise they’re getting. Enjoy this feeling, fans — hopefully, it lasts.
