Redskins have decision to make with Adrian Peterson’s contract

The Washington Redskins have a decision to make when it comes to filling out their backfield this offseason, or rather, keeping it the same.

On the surface level, they seem to be pretty set at the position, with Derrius Guice set to return from another knee injury, Adrian Peterson still chugging along, and Bryce Love looking to make his NFL debut in his second year. It seems likely that Washington will keep things as-is in the RB room, but they do have an option when it comes to Peterson’s contract.

AP signed a two-year deal with the Redskins ahead of the 2019 season, and the team has an option on his second year, where he is due $3.1 million. If Washington were to cut him loose, they would save $2.4 million against the cap, according to ESPN’s John Keim.

Cutting Peterson seems highly unlikely, though, as he’s stood as one of their most durable players over the past two seasons, only missing one game when Jay Gruden decided to make him a healthy scratch in Week 1 against the Eagles.

The Redskins are keen on adding talent to their offense and giving Dwayne Haskins weapons to work with, but getting rid of AP would be a mistake. He is the safety net that they need, especially when you consider how injury-riddled their backfield is.
