Redskins decline Josh Doctson’s fifth-year option

In a telling move, the Washington Redskins won’t pick up the fifth-year option on wide receiver Josh Doctson.

Doctson, the No. 22 overall pick in 2016, has underwhelmed over the course of three seasons with the Redskins, so the front office won’t make an effort to extend his stay at a cheap cost thanks to the option year built into the contracts of first-round picks.

The TCU product has yet to blossom into the No. 1 wideout the Redskins had envisioned. He did score six touchdowns in 2017, but regressed to two last season. He’s only caught 81 of 163 career targets and averaged 13.6 yards per catch.

While all hope isn’t lost for Doctson, he has a bleak outlook if the Redskins were willing to pass on a fifth year despite losing Jamison Crowder in free agency. They also took two wideouts in last weekend’s draft: Terry McLaurin and Kelvin Harmon.
