The Chicago Bears have lost another valuable defensive reserve to free agency.
Former Bears inside linebacker Kevin Pierre-Louis has agreed to a one-year deal with the Washington Redskins, according to NFL insider Ian Rapoport. The deal is worth $3.45 million with incentives.
For comparison, general manager Ryan Pace signed Pierre-Louis for $805 thousand last year.
Pierre-Louis flashed near the end of the 2019 season, where he played in relief of the injured Roquan Smith. Pierre-Louis had 28 tackles and one interception in the final four games.
The Bears re-signed inside linebacker Danny Trevathan to a three-year deal last week, locking up a valuable member of their defense. But considering some of the moves Chicago has made in free agency thus far — signing pass rusher Robert Quinn and tight end Jimmy Graham — they didn’t have the money to extend Pierre-Louis.
But Pierre-Louis isn’t the first defensive player Chicago lost to free agency. Inside linebacker Nick Kwiatkoski is headed to the Las Vegas Raiders and defensive lineman Nick Williams is staying in the NFC North with the Detroit Lions.
The interesting thing is that all three of those players weren’t starters in 2019. In fact, they all filled in for injured starters, and they certainly made it worth their while, as they’ve signed new deals elsewhere.
