Redmill Care Home records eleven deaths as death toll rises across West Lothian in recent weeks

A West Lothian care home has now recorded 11 deaths linked to Covid-19.

Redmill Care Home in East Whitburn reported another four deaths over the weekend, taking the total to 11, with a further 35 residents and 20 members of staff testing positive for Covid-19.

The NHS crisis management team have working with the care home, run by HC-One, to try and bring the Covid outbreak under control.

A spokesperson for HC-One said: “Our thoughts and sympathies are with all families who have lost a loved one from coronavirus and we are doing our utmost to support them during this difficult time.

“Supporting our residents is at the heart of what we do and our colleagues are doing everything they can to care for residents at Redmill in what are hugely difficult circumstances.

“We have a comprehensive coronavirus contingency plan in place and we are working closely with NHS Lothian and Public Health to ensure we are doing all we can to respond to and overcome this outbreak.

“A very significant amount of resource and senior leadership time is being dedicated to this home so that we can help as many residents as possible to return to good health.”

In recent weeks The Courier has reported on outbreaks in schools and nursing homes as the second wave of the virus sweeps across the county.

Cases continue to be reported in Lothian and the latest statistics for October 18 show that 122 new positive cases were reported with 782 in the preceding seven days and 7736 in total since records began.

As of the same date 39 new cases had been reported in West Lothian, with a weekly total for positive tests of 232 and the overall total returned in the county is now 1434 recorded cases.

This means West Lothian is still above the national average with 126 per 100,000 of the population having tested positive for the contagion in the past week. The national figure is 115 per 100,000 people.

The death toll is also beginning to rise again in the county.

Records show that after the first wave the last death was on June 27 but sadly the numbers began rising again at the end of September.

After three months without any deaths in West Lothian there was a fatality recorded on September 30.

Since, there has been another 15 recorded in recent weeks, taking the total number of Covid-19 related deaths in West Lothian to 116 in total.
