Redland pub The Clyde takes down 'heartless' sign after someone living nearby complained

A Bristol pub has removed a sign from outside after someone living in the area complained it had "troubling implications".

The Clyde, in Hampton Road, Redland, had an A board outside which read "Family problems? Financial difficulties? Health issues? Relationship trouble? Nothing matters when you’re on the sauce. Please drink responsibly and quickly."

But one person who lives nearby - who wished to remain anonymous - called the sign "irresponsible and heartless".

They said: “The implication is alcohol will solve all your problems.

“There is already such pressure on young people to drink and this sign is totally irresponsible.

“Referencing those four serious situations people may be struggling with, and then suggesting they can be overcome by drinking, is irresponsible and rather heartless and dismissive.

“It’s saying that you can drink your problems away and worse it is encouraging you to do it quickly.

“You often see these signs trying to be funny but this one really hit me as I went past.”

The resident told Bristol Live the sign went up in early January and wondered if it was meant to target people experiencing January blues.

When approached for comment by Bristol Live, The Clyde have acknowledged the sign could have been insensitive and said it had been removed.

Not everyone who lives nearby feels it has been removed, one student living in the area told Bristol Live they appreciated the humour and found it funny.
