Redland Bakery enters liquidation - more than 50 people made redundant

More than 50 people have been made redundant after a long-running Bristol bakery entered liquidation.

The six branches of The Redland Bakery in Winterbourne, Stoke Lane, Staple Hill, Shirehampton, Cotham Hill and Chandos Road all closed suddenly on Thursday (February 27).

The company, which trades as West Country Wholesale Bakers Ltd, has also closed its headquarters on the Severnside Trading Estate in Avonmouth.

Financial services firm Smith & Williamson told Bristol Live the firm, which was taken over by Andrew Grzybowski in 2002, has made all 55 of its employees redundant.

A Smith & Williamson spokesperson said: "We have been instructed by the Director of the company to assist in placing the company into liquidation.

"The company operated from eight sites across Bristol.

"All operations closed on Thursday 27th February 2020 with 55 redundancies. We are aware that support is being given to the employees to enable them to claim anything owed to them.

"A report is being prepared for creditors who have lost money as a result of the closure."

People who worked for the company have reported all employees were called to a meeting on Friday, which is when they were told they had lost their jobs with immediate effect.

Bristol Live contacted The Redland Bakery's owners for a comment but has not had a response.
