Redheugh Bridge will be closed this weekend for rescheduled roadworks despite Storm Dennis warning

Major repair works will go ahead on the Redheugh Bridge this weekend after plans were delayed by Storm Ciara.

The bridge, which connects the A189 between Gateshead and Newcastle, was due to undergo a full weekend closure last week but with gale force winds forecast, the work was abandoned before it was begun.

Instead, the bridge will be closed over the next two weekends despite more weather warnings for wind on Saturday and Sunday.

Storm Dennis is following in the wake of Storm Ciara with spells of heavy rain and strong winds forecast across the UK.

Wind gusts will widely exceed 50mph over the weekend, with gusts of over 60mph possible over hills, coastal areas and exposed locations, according to the Met Office.

Heavy rain is also expected and with already saturated ground, there is a risk of further flooding.

However, the weather is not expected to be as severe or disruptive as Storm Ciara.

Work is taking place on the bridge to replace the four major expansion joints. The whole bridge will have to close to traffic as removing the joints will leave substantial gaps in the carriageway which traffic would not be able to cross.

Pedestrians will be able to use the footpath though there may be temporary diversions.

The first bridge closure will be from 8pm on Friday, February 14 until 6am Monday, February 17, with the second closure starting at 8pm on Friday, February 22 and ending at 6am on Monday, February 24.

Work this weekend is still subject to any changing weather conditions which may make conditions hazardous for those on the bridge.

During the closures, drivers will be diverted over the Tyne Bridge which may increase congestion.

A spokesperson for Gateshead Council said: "As some of the works are being undertaken at night it is likely there will be some noise disturbance to nearby premises, though efforts will be made to minimise this as far as possible.

"Gateshead Council apologises for any inconvenience these essential works will cause."
