Redheugh Bridge to close for two weekends with drivers warned to expect delays

The Redheugh Bridge will be closed for two consecutive weekends this month due to major repair works.

From 8pm on Friday, February 7 until 6am Monday, February 10 traffic will be unable to use the bridge which carries the A189 over the River Tyne between Newcastle and Gateshead.

This will also be the case on the following weekend from 6pm on Friday, February 14 until 6am on Monday, February 17.

Over both weekends A189 motorists will be diverted over the Tyne Bridge which could increase journey times for drivers.

Pedestrians will be able to use the footway although there may be temporary diversions in place.

The essential works are required to replace four major expansion joints on the bridge, last restored in 2004.

Routine maintenance on the Redheugh Bridge will also be carried out during this time to minimise future traffic disruption, Gateshead Council said.

The two weekends have been deliberately chosen by the authorities to avoid Newcastle United home fixtures.

People planning to attend the Utilita Arena or Eagles Community Arena for events on these weekends should allow extra time for their journey.
