The Redheugh Bridge needed to be partially closed on Sunday afternoon after an emergency incident.
Officers from Northumbria Police and personnel from Tyne and Wear Fire and Rescue service and North East Ambulance Service were all on the scene.
It appeared that a woman was on the wrong side of the railings and required assistance.
One lane of traffic heading south towards Gateshead was disrupted during the incident.
Police advised that the incident is now over.
Fire service personnel equipped with abseiling equipment were involved in the response.
