Lake Macquarie City Council has reopened Redhead Beach following a temporary closure due to a great white shark detection.
The council had said the beach would remain closed while lifeguards monitored the situation and that this was standard procedure in cases like this.
The observations include assessing the initial report, launching on-water investigations, and closing the beach if sighting is confirmed.
If the shark sighting is confirmed, lifeguards will place signs on site to alert people of the shark's recent appearance.
If necessary, lifeguards will attempt to move the shark further off shore.
After all of this, if there is no further sighting, they will consider reopening the beach to the public and remain vigilant.
