The National Printing Bureau kicked off Wednesday the printing process for the new 10,000 yen banknote, undergoing its first redesign in 20 years. Before being put into circulation in the first half of fiscal 2024, the notes will be distributed to companies that will need to make such preparations as adjusting vending machines to accept the new bills.
The new bill will feature a portrait of Eiichi Shibusawa, a pioneering industrialist known as the "father of Japanese capitalism," on the front and Tokyo Station's Marunouchi building on the back.
Meanwhile, the new 5,000 yen bill will feature Umeko Tsuda, the founder of Tsuda University, and the 1,000 yen bill will bear the visage of bacteriologist Shibasaburo Kitasato, both of which are slated to be printed this fall.
