Reddit was down — live reports on the brief downtime

Reddit logo and Reddit logo on phone.

If you struggled to access your Reddit feed today, you weren't alone. Down Detector saw a huge spike in issues, exceeding 20,000 reports. Needless to say, this is a pretty big issue for those of us who love mindlessly scrolling through Reddit's feed throughout the day.

Some of us here at Tom's Guide experienced the problems for ourselves — including me, though everything is working now.

Reddit has confirmed that there was an issue with the platform that has since been fixed.

If you want to see what was happening during the outage, you can read the live blog below.

Reddit was down — live updates on the outage

The story so far

According to Down Detector, problems started being reported at around 6.50 a.m. EST / 3:59 a.m. PST. Within half an hour that spike in reports exceeded 20,000 reports, showing how quickly this problem has arisen.

The fact the east coast is now waking up, and likely checking their feeds as they get ready for work, will have exacerbated the number of reports being received.

Reddit has confirmed the problem is real

This isn't some kind of mass hallucination or panic, Reddit has confirmed that the platform is facing some issues right now. The site's service page confirmed that the issue was being investigated from 4.27 PST, later updating at 4.44 PST to confirm that the problem has been identified and that a fix is in the works.

The service page also confirms that there is some "Degraded Performance" on Desktop, mobile web and all native mobile apps. I've experienced some of this myself, having been unable to leave comments on posts — despite still being able to browse some content in my feed.

What's affected?

According to Reddit there is some "degraded performance" on desktop web, mobile web and native mobile apps, but what does that actually mean?

For me the problem initially manifested as issues with commenting, getting an "Empty Response from Endpoint" error on the Android app. though this isn't uncommon, and I was still able to browse threads at my leisure. However that seems to have cleared up, and I've been able to brows different threads without issue.

Chime in with your own experiences down in the comments if you've faced any Reddit issues today.

Reports are dropping pretty quickly

As quickly as the reports spiked, it seems that they have started to drop pretty rapidly. Down to below 9,000 according to Down Detector.

Reddit hasn't updated the situation since it confirmed a fix was being implemented, but the user reports suggest that some of the problems may not be as plentiful as they were.

Like a stone

The reports are dropping like a stone. In fact, they're down to around 1,000 right now, which is far from the 20,000 at which it peaked.

The fix has been implemented

According to Reddit's status page, the fix has been implemented, which would explain the rapid drop in Down Detector reports.

"A fix has been implemented and we are monitoring the results," reads the status page.

A few moments later, Reddit posted, "We are continuing to monitor for any further issues."
