Red Wings stop losing skid, top Flyers 5-4 in shootout

DETROIT _ The Detroit Red Wings did enough to earn what they needed: A reprieve from losing.

They took advantage of an old teammate Tuesday at Little Caesars Arena, ending Petr Mrazek's night after he allowed three goals on six second-period shots.

The Philadelphia Flyers rallied in the third period, but the Wings did enough to pull out a 5-4 shootout victory that ended a 0-9-1 winless streak.

Frans Nielsen was the only one to score in the shootout.

Dylan Larkin scored his second goal of the night with six minutes left in regulation, after the Flyers had scored two straight goals to force a tie, but Travis Konecny forced another tie with 5:26 remaining.

Rookie Evgeny Svechnikov scored his first NHL goal at 9:57 of the second period, beating Mrazek on a short slap shot. That prompted the Flyers to replace Mrazek with Alex Lyon.

The Wings started like a hungry team, generating chances like a wrap-around by Svechnikov and a backhand attempt by Tyler Bertuzzi. The Wings ran up a 6-1 edge in shots, and 13-9 overall in the first period.

It was Mrazek's first game in Detroit since the March 19 trade, and he nodded in acknowledgment of cheering fans during an intermission 'welcome back' message on the Jumbotron. It was a good thing the Wings got it out of the way early.

At 6:08 of the second period, Larkin beat Mrazek on a wrist shot from the right circle that eluded Mrazek block sider. Luke Glendening made it 2-0 when he beat Mrazek short-side while the Wings were short-handed.

Sean Couturier scored while Jonathan Ericsson sat for slashing, but Svechnikov's work down low paid off with a 3-1 lead a minute later when he pounced on a loose puck in the slot and wired it past Mrazek.

The Flyers pressed in the third, outshooting the Wings 9-1 the first seven minutes of the period. They edged within a goal at 7:46 on Matt Read's shot through traffic and tied it when Shaybe Gostisbehere converted on a power play.

But Jimmy Howard came up large in overtime and stopped all three Flyers attempts in the shootout, allowing the Red Wings to stave off playoff elimination for another night.
