Red Wings' penalty kill stumbles in 3-1 loss to Hurricanes

DETROIT _ The Detroit Red Wings got a much-needed boost from their power play, but their penalty kill let them down.

The Wings fell, 3-1, to the Carolina Hurricanes on Saturday at Little Caesars Arena, losing at home for the third straight time.

Tomas Tatar used his 12th goal of the season to tie the game in the first period. The Wings had a handful of close chances, but took a 1-1 score into the third period. Elias Lindholm scored his second power-play goal of the night to pull he Canes ahead at 6:54. Justin Williams put a rally out of reach when he scored with 1:58 left in regulation. The Wings got a power play with 1:45 to go and pulled Jimmy Howard for the extra attacker, but couldn't solve Cam Ward again.

The Hurricanes were coming off their bye week and injuries prevented their leading scorer, Sebastian Aho, from playing.

Dylan Larkin created a great scoring chance on the opening shift but his backhand attempt went wide. Instead the Hurricanes scored first, taking converting on a power play when Gustav Nyquist was called for tripping. Howard stopped Jordan Staal's shot but Lindholm got to the rebound and fired it into an open net, at 2:57 of the first period. Danny DeKeyser was called for high-sticking at the same time, sending the Wings on another penalty kill. The Wings were outshot, 6-0, after the second Canes power play ended and 9-2 at the midway point of the first period.

Anthony Mantha earned the Wings a power play at 15:31 when he drew a penalty as he drove to the Canes net. The Wings, 2 for 33 on man advantages the previous 10 games, re-arranged their power-play units _ and were rewarded with a goal. Larkin passed the puck to Mike Green, who found Tatar in the right circle for a one-timer, at 16:37. Shots were 13-9 to Carolina after 20 minutes.

Howard came up with a big save on Brock McGinn late in the second period. McGinn broke away and fired a shot from the low slot. Noah Hanifin corralled the rebound but wasn't able to fire a shot until behind the goal line. Shots were 21-15 to Carolina after 40 minutes.
