DENVER _ The Red Wings' misery grew to 10 games after they were run over at Colorado.
The Wings fell 5-1 at Pepsi Center. Nathan MacKinnon, picked first overall by Colorado in 2013, had two goals and an assist. Gabriel Landeskog, selected second overall in 2011, had a goal and two assists, demonstrating what a difference high-end picks make.
The Wings are on a 0-9-1 skid as they head into the last 10 games of the season. They haven't won in three weeks. The only good news: The worse they finish, the better their draft lottery odds.
It didn't take long for Sunday to look like it'd be another loss.
Jared Coreau got the start; the Wings have to decide whether to keep him the rest of the season, as he's nearing 30 days with them. Past that mark, he'd have to go on waivers to be sent down.
The Wings fell behind four minutes into the game when Gabriel Landeskog deflected the puck, which Nathan MacKinnon shot through traffic. It grew to a two-goal deficit at 14:44. Carl Soderbergh slipped the puck between Trevor Daley's legs and Blake Comeau tipped the puck into an open net. Anthony Mantha had a chance to make a dent as he hung around Colorado's net but his backhand attempt was saved by Semyon Varlamov.
The Wings were fortunate to exit the first period only down by two goals _ they gave up good chances, and had little success getting the puck on net themselves.
They had a better push to start the second period, and the fourth line contributed an early shift that saw Evgeny Svechnikov throw the puck at the net from just outside the left post. They failed to build momentum during a power play, though, and then the Avs used their speed to take over again. MacKinnon got it to 3-0 when he went around Danny DeKeyser and sent the puck in off Coreau.
Justin Abdelkader scored at 12:38 when he got the puck from Martin Frk and threw it on from the bottom of the left circle. The Wings had a good second period all in all, generating more chances than in the first.
A power play early in the third period saw Varlamov make two saves. Luke Glendening had a good chance by the front of the net back at even strength, as the Wings kept up pressure. MacKinnon killed any rallying hopes when he wrapped the puck around the net and fired a shot that went in off Jonathan Ericsson while Coreau was wrapped around the outside of the other goal post.
Abdelkader was tossed from the game with 3:34 to go in the game after the Avs made it 5-1 on Tyson Barrie's power play goal, which came while both Abdelkader and Mike Green served crosschecking penalties. Abdelkader slammed his stick on the bench as he left the ice.
