DETROIT _ A good start and shot mentality couldn't shake the Red Wings from their losing streak.
On a night where reviews dominated the offensive story line, the Wings were unable to build a good start into a celebration, losing, 5-3, to the Winnipeg Jets on Friday at Joe Louis Arena. The Wings have one point in their past four games.
Brandon Tanev's second goal of the game came on a breakaway with 1:16 left, and Nikolaj Ehlers found an empty net with 5.8 seconds remaining, dampening what should have been a festive night.
The game celebrated Gordie Howe, who died in June at 88. Howe's children, Mark, Marty, Murray and Cathy, came out for a ceremonial puck-drop, and there was a video tribute highlighting Howe's legendary career.
The Wings had 1-0 and 2-1 leads on goals from Luke Glendening and Henrik Zetterberg, but the game was tied early in the third period after reviews showed the puck jammed beneath Petr Mrazek in his net.
Justin Abdelkader made it 3-2 on a slap shot midway through the third period, but Tanev scored less than 2 minutes later, with a third review of the night showing the puck inside the net.
The Wings outshot the Jets, 33-30.
The Wings started with the urgency needed from a slumping team. Riley Sheahan sent a good shot into Connor Hellebuyck's pads among an early barrage, and the Wings had something to show for their resolve after just 3 minutes. Danny DeKeyser did the smart thing when he got the puck at Winnipeg's blue line, firing a shot toward the net that Glendening tipped for his first goal of the season.
Midway through the period, the Wings had a 10-2 edge in shots, including a breakaway attempt by Darren Helm.
Patrik Laine, the second overall pick in the June draft, got past the Wings' defense and snuck a puck behind Mrazek at 15:30.
The second period saw the Wings continue to batter away at Connor Hellebuyck, including during a second power play. Mrazek wasn't as busy, but Mark Scheifele had a good shot during one of the Jets' forays.
It got to 2-1 at 9:40. Tomas Tatar fired a shot that hit Hellebuyck and bounced out. Zetterberg batted at the puck, and while the goal was at first waved off by officials, a review showed Zetterberg's stick was not high.
Another review was needed early in the third period to rule that Scheifele successfully jammed the puck beneath Mrazek as he sprawled back in his net. Video showed the puck between his torso and left arm.
