Red Wings' good start not enough vs. Bruins, 3-2, in OT

DETROIT _ The Detroit Red Wings saw their power play produce, saw Dylan Larkin scored on a short-handed breakaway.

The Wings were the better team much of Wednesday's game against the Boston Bruins at Little Caesars Arena, but twice saw leads leveled. They ended up losing 3-2 in overtime when Brad Marchand scored just 35 seconds in. The Wings are 0-6 in overtime this season.

Darren Helm sprang Larkin while the Wings were on a penalty kill midway through the third period, and Larkin turned the chance into a high-light breakaway that ended with him stuffing a backhand on Tuukka Rask. David Pastrnak scored after Rask was pulled for an extra attacker, with 1:26 to play in regulation.

Tomas Tatar scored on a power play in the second period.

The arena appeared about a third full. The game didn't start till 8:10 p.m., and fans traveling to attend the game also had to contend with snowfall that began early in the day. The ones who did attend seemed especially spirited.

Again the Wings started well, using their speed to gain offensive zone time. They had a 6-2 edge in shots after nine minutes, and that included killing a penalty for too many men. The Wings had the puck on their stick most of the period, and had a couple good looks during a late power play. They outshot the Bruins, 9-2, after 20 minutes.

The Bruins showed more bite to start the second period, and got another power play. That killed, the Wings went back to gaining o-zone time. They got a power play midway through the period, and Tatar converted after just 15 seconds, firing a shot while Justin Abdelkader screened Rask. A second power play in the period yielded good looks from Dylan unit. The Wings had been 0-for-13 on man advantages dating back four games.

Noel Acciari poked a loose puck behind a sprawled Jimmy Howard at 3:02 of the third period to make it 1-1.
