NEW YORK _ The Detroit Red Wings followed a famine with a feast.
Petr Mrazek held off the New York Islanders during the second period Tuesday at Barclays Center and the Wings scored three goals in the third period to come away with a 6-3 victory.
Martin Frk scored his seventh goal of the season, Gustav Nyquist had his ninth and Anthony Mantha added his team-leading 13th. Mantha's score came during a second period that rarely saw the Wings gain the offensive zone, but such was the goaltending of Thomas Greiss.
Defensemen Trevor Daley and Mike Green scored in the third period, and Luke Glendening scored an empty-netter with 28.1 seconds left.
The Wings were outshot for the game, 37-22, with Mrazek making 34 saves.
The Wings gave up a goal when Anders Lee finished a chance created when John Tavares won a puck battle behind Detroit's net to score at 6:32 of the first period. The Wings lacked in offensive zone time but tied the game on their second shot, at 9:33. Dylan Larkin played the puck along the boards to Jonathan Ericsson, who centered a pass that Frk redirected past Greiss.
Frans Nielsen drew a penalty at 15:42 to send the Wings on a power play. They converted at 16:49, when Nyquist swiped at a puck sent to the slot by Henrik Zetterberg. Zetterberg also set up Mantha and Daley, giving Zetterberg six assists the past three games.
The Wings began the second period killing off a penalty by Justin Abdelkader, and faced another penalty kill at the 1:30 mark. Ryan Pulock converted on a slap shot to tie the game. Then came a stretch that saw the Wings play shift after shift in their own zone. Greiss faced one shot the first eight minutes. Larkin was sent off for a second time at 11:59, and the Islanders took advantage to make it 3-2. Matthew Barzal passed the puck between his legs into the crease, and Josh Bailey scored. Mantha scored from behind the Islanders' net at 15:15, on what was Detroit's third shot of the period. The Wings were outshot, 23-4, in the period.
Daley scored his first goal Friday and followed up Tuesday in the third period, when he fired in a drop pass from Zetterberg at 10:03. Larkin also assisted. Green scored at 14:12 when he roofed the puck. Larkin sent the puck to him as he fell.
