Red Wings blow third-period lead, lose to Avalanche, 4-3, in OT

DETROIT _ The Detroit Red Wings gave up a tying goal in the final minute of the first period and again in the final minute of the third period.

Nathan MacKinnon scored at 2:55 of overtime to give the Avalanche a 4-3 win at Little Caesars Arena on Sunday night.

After pulling their goaltender for an extra skater, the Avs tied the game at 3, with 45.2 seconds remaining in the game on Carl Soderberg's third goal of the season.

Andreas Athanasiou scored at 19:03 of the second period to give the Red Wings a 2-1 lead. Niklas Kronwall scored a power play goal at 11:07 of the third go give the Wings a two-goal cushion. It was his first goal of the season.

The Wings gave up a power-play goal to Nail Yakupov at 13:45 of the third period. Wings goaltender Jimmy Howard made 32 saves in regulation.

A blocked shot led to a breakaway goal for Athanasiou in the final minute of the second period, which gave the Wings a 2-1 lead. Erik Johnson's shot was blocked and Tomas Tatar passed ahead to Athanasiou, who raced up the center of the ice and scored his fifth goal in 11 games.

Dylan Larkin's shot from the top of the left circle deflected in off Justin Abdelkader to give the Red Wings a 1-0 lead at 14:01 of the first period. The Wings were being outshot, 6-3, before Abdelkader scored his fourth goal of the season. Larkin was originally announced as the goal scorer, which would have given him a goal in three consecutive games. Instead, he was picked up his 16th assist and team-leading 20th point. Larkin already has more assists this season than he had all of last season (15). Larkin has five points over his last three games.

The Wings looked like they'd go into the first intermission with the lead, but Johnson tied the game at 1, with 15.1 seconds left, his first goal of the season. Johnson one-timed a pass from Tyson Barrie that beat Howard five-hole.

Wings defenseman Danny DeKeyser returned after missing 17 games with a fractured ankle. He took a hooking penalty at 15:21 of the first period. DeKeyser played 9:51 through the first two periods and finished with 16:23 of ice time.

The Wings killed off a 48-second 5-on-3 in the second period. Anthony Mantha went off for holding Nikita Zadorov at 7:22, then Frans Nielsen was called for tripping Mikko Rantanen at 8:35. The Wings were being outshot, 20-9, after killing off both penalties. The Wings also killed off a roughing penalty against Mike Green. But the Wings had the only shot on that power play.
