Red Wings beat Devils in overtime on Dylan Larkin goal, 3-2

NEWARK, N.J. _ The Detroit Red Wings keep finding ways to win.

They were short on the bench and came up short on the ice to start their Saturday matinee against the Devils at Prudential Center, but Dylan Larkin scored with 50.3 seconds left in overtime to secure a 3-2 final. After winning just once in their first 10 games, the Wings have won eight of their last 10 games.

Jonathan Bernier's goaltending kept his teammates within striking distance as the Wings succeeded in tying a game after falling behind by two goals for the fourth time in the last six games.

Luke Glendening used his third goal of the season to push back in the second period, about three minutes after the Wings had coughed up a shortie. Michael Rasmussen scored a net-front goal for a third straight game to provide a deadlock late in the third period.

The Wings lost Darren Helm to an upper-body injury early in the first period; it set the tone for a disappointing period. A bad pass by Andreas Athanasiou led to Pavel Zacha scoring off a cross-ice pass from Jesper Bratt midway through the first period. The Wings weren't crisp and when they did generate offensive zone time, they couldn't get the puck on net. Jonathan Bernier came through with 14 saves to just four needed by counterpart Keith Kinkaid.

When Luke Glendening slashed to the net and fired a shot from the low slot seven minutes into the second period, it was Detroit's first shot on net of the period. They went on a power play at 8:03. Larkin used Anthony Mantha as a screen to send a wrist shot in from the right circle, but Kinkaid stopped the puck. The Wings didn't generate momentum off that power play, and on their next, the indignity grew as they fell behind. Travis Zajac won the faceoff against Frans Nielsen and Blake Coleman took off with the puck, racing into Detroit's zone and firing a shot from the slot that eluded Bernier.

The Devils pushed hard to build on their lead in the third period, stymieing the Wings' attempts to rally. Bernier came up big as he denied Joey Anderson's shot from the top of the right circle, and turned away Zajac and Kyle Palmieri's attempts from the slot area. While Bernier did his part, the skaters came through with a better third period, and tied it up when Rasmussen deflected Mike Green's shot from the point with 6:23 to play. Bernier gloved a one-timer from Taylor Hall with less than two minutes to go, one of 36 saves Bernier made in regulation.
