If ever we needed proof that the Covid-19 crisis has upended the world, shaken it out and spilled its contents crashing all over the floor, it’s Anna Wintour in a pair of tracksuit bottoms.
The 70-year-old Editor-in-Chief of Vogue is famed for her strict adhesion to a sartorial formula of smart dresses, Manolos and her beloved sunglasses. Slouch-wear lover she is not.
In fact, when asked in a Vogue video interview once whether she would ever wear tracksuit bottoms, she responded with a decisive – and typically disdainful – “NO.”
But Covid has, it would seem, made slouch potatoes of us all, as taking to the official Vogue Instagram yesterday to post news of an upcoming series of talks called Vogue Global Conversations (a series of Zoom talks featuring Vogue editors and guest designers to discuss the fashion industry's future), Wintour was pictured at her WFH desk in a black and red striped woolly jumper and pair of comfy-looking red tracksuit bottoms. Yep, the world has indeed gone mad.
In fact, the only reassuring aspect of the striped jumper (a £234 cashmere and wool blend number from NYC-based label La Ligne, shop it here) and red trakkies (which feature a white stripe and are from an unknown brand) ensemble was Wintour’s decision to accessorise with her trademark sunnies. Phew, not an imposter after all.
As the lockdown looks set to continue, so too does our love-in with comfort clothing. In fact, fashion influencer platform LikeToKnow.it has seen searches for jogging bottoms increase by 2000 per cent since last month, and something tells me Wintour’s WFH look will have us all hunting for the perfect rouge joggers for our next splurge.
