Red squirrels under threat as deadly squirrelpox virus discovered in the Stewartry

An outbreak of a virus deadly to red squirrels has been discovered in the Stewartry.

The Saving Scotland’s Red Squirrels organisation is taking action after a squirrelpox outbreak was confirmed near Palnackie.

The virus is carried by grey squirrels, who are not affected but can lead to the death of red squirrels within weeks.

Volunteers have been working with landowners to remove wildlife feeders and trapping has begun to catch sick red squirrels and remove grey squirrels.

Anyone that sees a red squirrel that looks ill should contact Saving Scotland’s Red Squirrels directly, if possible with a location and photo, by e-mailing squirrels@scottishwildlifetrust.org.uk or calling 01556611288.

If a dead red squirrel is found, the project can arrange a post-mortem.

People can also help by reporting red and grey squirrel sightings online at www.scottishsquirrels.co.uk and by removing wildlife feeding equipment while the outbreak is ongoing.
