Red Sox, Yankees starters have disastrous outings in London

The New York Yankees and Boston Red Sox played the first regular-season MLB game in Europe on Saturday at London Stadium, where starting pitchers Rick Porcello and Masahiro Tanaka were each pulled in the first inning after awful outings.

Porcello, who is 5-7 on the season with a 4.52 ERA, gave up six runs and recorded just one out before being pulled from the game. Porcello gave up three doubles to allow the Yankees to jump out to a 4-0 lead, before Aaron Hicks blasted a two-run home run.

Porcello exited with a single-game ERA of 162.0 – but the Red Sox bounced back in the bottom of what turned out to be an epic inning.

Tanaka took the mound with a 6-0 lead, but quickly found himself in trouble after surrendering a single and a double to open the bottom of the first. Tanaka then walked two batters, and eventually gave up a two-run single to Brock Holt. Boston’s next batter, Michael Chavis, followed up with a 3-run homer to tie the game and end Tanaka’s day.
