BOSTON — It’s true that if the Red Sox’ offense is their biggest problem right now, then they should be fine.
But two weeks into the season, they’re still waiting for their talented lineup to put it all together.
The Red Sox offense has been feast or famine to start the season, and this week against the Blue Jays, it was the latter. On Thursday, it was Toronto starter Kevin Gausman’s turn to silence the Red Sox, who were too little, too late in a 3-2 loss at Fenway Park, where they ended their first homestand of the season on a down note.
It’s still very early but this certainly isn’t the way the Red Sox hoped to open their season, falling below .500 as they head out on a 10-game road trip that includes difficult trips to St. Petersburg, Fla., and Toronto, the latter of which they’ll be undermanned without an unknown number of unvaccinated players.
Gausman tossed eight shutout innings and struck eight Red Sox before Trevor Story’s leadoff single in the ninth ended his day. The Red Sox finally generated some life as Xander Bogaerts’ RBI double and Alex Verdugo’s RBI groundout made it a 3-2 game. But with Bogaerts on third with one out, they couldn’t bring him home. Bobby Dalbec grounded out to third, and Jackie Bradley Jr. grounded out to first to end the game.
