BOSTON _ The Rangers lost for the third consecutive day as the Red Sox opened a three-game set at Fenway Park with a hit barrage and 12-5 win. Boston collected 21 hits, the most allowed by the Rangers this season.
Nick Martinez was tagged for six runs on 11 hits, including six doubles and a homer in 4 1/3 innings and took the loss. He was spotted a 4-0 lead before he threw his first pitch, but the Red Sox scored one in the first before taking the lead with a four-run third. In the inning, the first three batters singled, doubled and doubled before Brock Holt's two-run homer gave Boston a 5-4 lead.
Michael Roth, making his debut with the Rangers after being called up from Triple A Round Rock on Sunday, replaced Martinez with a runner on second and one out in the fifth. After recording an out, Roth walked Mookie Betts and surrendered an RBI single to Dustin Pedroia.
The Red Sox added two more in the sixth and a solo homer by Pedroia in the seventh to increase their lead to 9-4. Roth was charged with six earned runs on 10 hits in 3 2/3 innings. Boston added three runs in the eighth on homers by Travis Shaw and Betts.
The Rangers singled five times, including four consecutive with two outs to score four runs in the first inning against Red Sox starter Rick Porcello. Adrian Beltre's single to center scored Ian Desmond from second with two outs. Rougned Odor's single to right scores two more and Jurickson Profar drove in Odor with single through the right side.
Porcello held the Rangers scoreless on seven hits over the next five innings and earned the win. Odor homered in the eighth to snap a six-inning scoreless stretch. The Rangers had 16 hits, two shy of the season-high of 18 in a game.
