Red Sox Acquire Tyler O'Neill From Cardinals In Three-Player Trade

The Red Sox added a key piece to their outfield on Friday.

Boston traded two pitchers—25-year-old Nick Robertson and minor leaguer Victor Santos—to the Cardinals in exchange for outfielder Tyler O’Neill, the team announced Friday.

O’Neill, who enjoyed his best season in 2021 by batting .286 with 34 home runs and 80 RBI, has witnessed his production tail off since the offensive breakout campaign due to his inability to stay healthy.

Battling a myriad of injuries, the 28 year-old outfielder has appeared in 168 games the past two seasons, hitting only .229 while collecting just 23 home runs and 79 RBI.

The Cardinals, who have a logjam of outfield talent, received much needed bullpen help.

The hard-throwing Robertson has appeared in 18 career MLB games with the Dodgers and Red Sox, striking out 26 batters in only 22 1/3 innings. The 23 year-old Santos has posted 32-29 record while sporting a 3.72 ERA in the minors.

Boston continues to shake up its outfield after trading Alex Verdugo to the Yankees on Tuesday.
