Red Queen by Victoria Aveyard – review

It all comes down to blood. Red or Sliver. Poverty or power. Destined for battle or destined for greatness. Seventeen-year-old Mare is one of the unlucky ones. With no apprenticeship, she accepts the reality that she is going to follow her three older brothers into the war.

Suddenly, her world becomes a distorted map of lies. The king and queen - both Silvers - discover that Mare may be a threat to their kingdom because she possesses an ability. A superhuman power that only Silvers are meant to have authority over. Dressed up to play the part of a long-lost princess, Mare realises that anyone can betray anyone.

Red Queen

After reading some glowing reviews about this book, I had high expectations. I’m very pleased to say that they were met! The way Aveyard weaved in so many twists and turns into the plot was supreme and despite only finishing this book a couple of days ago, I already want to read it again.

The intricacy of the descriptions and situations give me an inkling that this will be a book that I will read many times and I will notice something slightly different. Even though I read the book with the attention that a predator gives its prey.

This dystopian thriller had me gripped from the beginning. I think that this is a clever idea that has been perfectly executed - I can’t wait for the rest of the series!
