Red Queen is set in a world where the Silvers (people with silver blood) have abilities, and use this power as an excuse to treat the Reds (normal people) like slaves. Reds are forced to carry out the Silvers’ bidding, forced to live a life with the constant fear of conscription as soon as they are 18 and without a job.
Mare, unemployed, 17, and a good pickpocket, has to live in her sister Gisa’s shadow. Her family, who don’t accept her pickpocketing even though they need it to survive, are ashamed of her, but she still cares for them deeply, and never stops trying to save them.
As she approaches her eighteenth birthday the fear of conscription looms closer, and she shares this with a stranger. The next day she miraculously gains a job at the palace but, in a disastrous turn of events, she discovers in front of the whole court that she has deadly powers, like the Silvers. Mare is special and is a threat to the kingdom, so the king hides her in plain sight, betrothed to his youngest son, and claims she is Silver. Everything is not as it seems, and the Silver world is a dangerous one.
I loved this book. I really enjoyed the concept, and the plot was very captivating. The character development was very interesting, and I liked learning about all the different characters, and getting to know them. It was written very well, and I would recommend it to any teen, regardless of how much they like reading.
