Red motorbike rider could hold key after 'kind-hearted' teen killed in crash

A devastated mum is still fighting for answers over her son's death seven months on.

Ben Smith was killed in a crash involving a moped and motorbike on Holcroft Lane, Warrington, on July 18 last year. Emergency services rushed to the incident, at around 9.30pm, but the 17-year-old was pronounced dead at the scene.

Cheshire Police is now making a fresh appeal for information regarding the crash that also left a 13-year-old with serious injuries. Police are particularly keen to speak to the owner of a red motorcycle, who was seen just before the crash, and may be key to understanding the exact circumstances of the incident.

In a tribute at the time of his death, Ben's family described him as a "kind-hearted boy" who "made everyone laugh".

Ben's mum Sue said: “I am struggling to come to terms with the loss of my son at such a young age. I know that this will not bring Ben back but any help from the rider or other witnesses will help me and the police investigation into the collision”.

A spokesperson for Cheshire Police said: "Enquiries in relation to the appeal remain ongoing and officers are appealing to anyone who may have been on Holcroft Lane between 9pm and 9:30pm on that evening.

"In particular, officers are keen to hear from the owner of a red motorcycle, who was seen just prior to collision, and may be key to understanding the exact circumstances of the incident.

"Anyone with information is urged to report it via the website quoting IML 1320718 or call 101. Information can also be passed on to Crimestoppers anonymously via https://crimestoppers-uk.org/give-information/forms/give-information-anonymously or call 0800 555 111."
