Red kochia plants delight the eye in Ibaraki Prefecture

An entire hill is awash in color at Hitachi Seaside Park in Hitachinaka, Ibaraki Prefecture, as round kochia plants turn red with the coming of the autumn season.

About 32,000 kochia are planted on the 1.9-hectare Miharashi no Oka (Hill of Good View) at the park. This year's kochia are smaller than usual, according to the park, due to the long rainy season that lasted until the end of July.

The best time to view the leaves is until around Monday, when the reddish color will gradually fade and turn golden.

"It's so beautiful, turning the hill red. I can feel that autumn has arrived," a female visitor, 42, from Otama, Fukushima Prefecture, said with a smile.

To prevent the spread of the novel coronavirus, reservations are required to visit the park on weekends, when it is expected to be crowded.
