Jets boss declares 'room to grow' despite thumping 'Nix

A firing Newcastle outfit have put on a box office showing at home to steamroll Wellington 4-1 and sit just off the A-League Men top spot.

But first-year coach Mark Milligan is keeping the lid on the Jets' remarkable rise, saying his side hasn't achieved anything yet.

Young star Lachie Bayliss set the tone at McDonald Jones Stadium by scoring in the opening 30 seconds on Friday night, before Clayton Taylor and Eli Adams piled on the misery in the second half.

Phoenix substitute Sander Kartum, making his ALM debut on loan from Scottish Premiership leaders Hearts, hit back to deny the hosts a clean sheet in the 86th minute.

The 'Nix comeback did not come however, with Xavier Bertoncello scoring three minutes later to seal the deal.

Embracing the 'Box Office Jets' tag in their rebuild under former 80-cap Socceroo Milligan, Newcastle (8-0-6) now match league leaders Auckland FC on 24 points after equalling a club record of four-straight wins.

The last time the Jets had snared four consecutive victories in the ALM was from November 29 to December 20, 2009.

Newcastle also claimed four-straight wins across the domestic league and the FFA Cup from April 20 to August 21, 2019.

"We know that at the moment in the league, we haven't achieved anything," Milligan said.

"We've given ourselves an opportunity to be in a good place to continue with this moving forward, but that's all we've done.

"I still feel there's growth in this side individually and as a team.

"It's not about reigning them in. It's about turning that excitement into positive energy."

Giancarlo Italiano's Phoenix, yet to find their footing after 14 games, are eighth following back-to-back defeats.

The road to the finals doesn't get any easier, slated to face reigning champions and fifth-placed Melbourne City next.

Italiano conceded his side weren't up to the fight after a short turnaround from last Sunday's 2-0 win over Sydney FC, but said he wasn't concerned just yet.

"It was a 50-50 game in terms of possession. We just got punished for some sloppy defending," Italiano said.

"On a better day, honestly, it could have been 4-all."

Newcastle needed less than a minute to put the foot down with Bayliss nailing a sensational strike from outside the box.

Left-winger Daniel Wilmering had kept possession despite losing his footing to find Bayliss, who then cleverly danced past the Phoenix's defence before deciding to go for home himself.

Wellington should've scored in the 28th minute with Ramy Najjarine and Ifeanyi Eze leading the attack, but a desperate Jets goalkeeper James Delianov pulled off a stunning triple save.

Wilmering popped up again with a quality pass into the box to set up Taylor's 56th-minute goal, before Bayliss opened the door for Adams with a cut back in the 70th minute.

Bertoncello had come off the bench in the 71st minute to replace Adams, before Kartum joined the fray in the 82nd minute for Kazuki Nagasawa.

Norwegian playmaker Kartum arrived at the 'Nix during the January transfer window as a replacement for winger Hideki Ishige (ACL).
