Jack Sherman, an early guitarist for the Red Hot Chili Peppers, has died at the age of 64, the band announced.

"We of the RHCP family would like to wish Jack Sherman smooth sailing into the worlds beyond, for he has passed," RHCP wrote in a statement on Twitter. "Jack played on our debut album as well as our first tour of the USA. We thank him for all times," they added. The group, currently led by Anthony Kiedis, did not define the cause of death.

The musician initially joined the group replacing Hillel Slovak. He played on the band's debut album (1984) "The Red Hot Chili Pepper", and contributed to the second album (1985) "Freaky Styley," reported The Deadline website.

Despite his various contributions over the years, Sherman was not inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame back in 2012.

"It's really painful to see all this celebrating going on and be excluded," Sherman told Billboard. Over the course of his career, Sherman also worked with other celebrity musicians including Bob Dylan.
