'Red herring' - Middlesbrough star fires warning shot to Bristol City and Derby County in play-off race

Middlesbrough's Adam Clayton insists his side are not out of the running for sixth place just yet.

Boro suffered a damaging defeat to Nottingham Forest on Monday, which saw Derby County move into the play-offs above them on goal difference.

Bristol City sit one point below the two but face the Rams this weekend, and both the Robins and Derby have a game in hand on Tony Pulis' side.

That means that the Robins' fate is still in their own hands, but Clayton says the game in hand is a red herring.

"It’s the Championship, anything can happen," the midfielder told Teesside Live. "Anything can happen. We’ve seen it so many times before now.

"There’ll definitely be twists and turns right up to the final five or ten minutes of the final round of games.

"When I was at Huddersfield, we were down with seven minutes of the season to go but we stayed up because of a goal somewhere else.

"Goals like that happen all the time in the Championship. There’s twists and turns to come."

He added: "Remember, Derby and Bristol City still have to play each other so for me, the game in hand is a bit of a red herring really. They play each other on Saturday, so that’s a game where both teams can’t get three points. Hopefully, that will be a draw.

"Both of them have some tough fixtures to play after that. Derby have West Brom on the last day.

"Bristol City aren’t pulling up any trees and Derby just sneaked home against QPR.

"Both of their games in hand are away, Derby are at Swansea and Bristol City are at Millwall so it’s by no means over.

"And I still think if we win both our games the situation is more in our hands than not."
