Red Dead Redemption 2 dev would "be surprised" if GTA 6 doesn't feature any ideas from Rockstar's open-world cowboy hit

GTA 6 Lucia.

A former Rockstar Games developer reckons the developer's upcoming GTA 6 will probably borrow a few ideas from Red Dead Redemption 2, not unlike the way GTA 5 borrowed from older titles in the studio's gameography.

Speaking to YouTuber Kiwi Talkz about the open-world behemoth, Rob Carr, once an audio designer on everything from LA Noire and GTA 5 to Red Dead Redemption 2, said he can pretty easily imagine older features creeping into the sequel in some form. His evidence? GTA 5, of course.

"Even on GTA 5, they took the Dead Eye system," he recalls. "They used the Dead Eye as one of the perks for one of the characters. You've got the Dead Eye thing that Michael used, I think you've got the slow-mo driving thing for Franklin, and the basically berserker mode for Trevor."

In case it's actually been 13 years since you've touched the game, all three of GTA 5's protagonists had a bespoke special ability. Michael in particular could slow down time as if he was channelling Max Payne to carefully line up his shots, which also has a little in common with the original Red Dead Redemption Dead Eye mechanic, meanwhile, Franklin's slowmo while driving calls back to Midnight Club.

With that context in mind, it wouldn't be wild to see GTA 6 also reach back into the past.

"They're all things that, you know – key things have been used in previous titles that they wanted to expand upon," Carr continues, talking about the GTA 5 abilities. "So I'll be surprised if they don't use something from Red Dead 2."

What that could be is anyone's guess. I wouldn't be surprised to see horse riding make an appearance, for example, or a feature like Arthur Morgan's evolving journal, though it'd probably manifest as a satirical social media feed rather than a heart warming sketch book.

Rockstar said GTA 6 marketing wouldn't start until the summer, but the wait for Trailer 3 has been so long that some fans have decided to disagree
