Red Claws officially claim former fifth overall pick Thomas Robinson

As expected, the Maine Red Claws (the Boston Celtics official NBA G League affiliate) officially claimed 6-foot-10 power forward Thomas Robinson off waivers on Sunday. Robinson, 27-years-old, averaged 21.9 points, 13.6 rebounds, 2.5 assits and 1.9 steals per game for the Chinese Basketball Association’s Beijing BeiKong this season.

The athletic big man last appeared in an NBA game in 2016-17 with the Los Angeles Lakers although he would play in three preseason games for the Atlanta Hawks this season before being waived.

Robinson, who was selected fifth overall pick in the 2012 NBA Draft by the Sacramento Kings, is hoping that a showcase with the Red Claws — who have four game remaining on their schedule — will catapult him onto the Boston Celtics roster. A player with grit, fire and perhaps entering the prime of his career, Boston may not have much use for a big man with their frontcourt stacked with bodies but Robinson’s efforts are commendable no matter the outcome.

He’s played for six teams in his five-year NBA career, averaging 4.9 points and 4.8 rebounds in 13.4 minutes per game.
