Red Bull Salzburg wonderkid Erling Haaland faces race against time to be fit for Liverpool clash

Red Bull Salzburg could be without star striker Erling Braut Haaland for Wednesday's visit to Liverpool in the Champions League.

The 19-year-old frontman has plundered 17 goals in 12 appearance for the Austrian side this term, including a hat-trick in their Group E opener with Genk earlier this month.

Haaland, who is the son of former Manchester City man Alfe-Inge, was expected to be Salzburg's chief goal threat at Anfield on Wednesday night.

However, the Norwegian forward is now a doubt for the game with illness, with the club's sporting director detailing the importance of the next 48 hours.

Haaland sat out Saturday's 4-1 win over Wien in the Austrian Bundesliga as a precaution and is also a major doubt for the trip to the European champions next week.

Speaking to Viasat, Salzburg sporting director Christoph Freund: "The next two days are important. He is checked by a doctor every day.

"He’s sick, and we don’t quite know when he will be back. Hopefully over the next few days."

Haaland's absence will be a massive disappointment for the teenager, who stated last week his eagerness to pit his wits against Reds centre-back Virgil van Dijk.

He said : "It’ll be a tough game at Anfield, but they’re only human, like us, so nothing is impossible.

"We have to be honest and say, 'Liverpool are the world’s best team, as they won the Champions League,' but Napoli are also very good and we beat them at home last year.

"I've never been to Anfield, but I think it is maybe one of the best atmospheres in the world and I look forward to playing there."
