Red Arrows spotted across Greater Manchester in stunning flypast

They are always in immaculate formation.

And that was the case today as one of the most iconic sights above British skies appeared.

The Red Arrows zipped over Greater Manchester while returning to their base at Scampton in Lincolnshire from the Isle of Man, via Blackpool.

They were seen over Lancashire, Bolton, Heywood and other parts of the region.

Always flown by pilots with front-line RAF operations experience the distinctive BAE Systems Hawk T1 jets triggered a Bank Holiday scalp tingle for many as they left the traditional blue, red, and white trail.

Jenny Walsh watched in awe as they passed over home in a V-shape and tweeted: "Now I know how the Queen feels"

Joseph Zacharias tweeted: "Pleasant surprise to have the Red Arrows above my head as I drive in for the on call ward round this morning," after they roared past him in Blackpool

The squadron was making a seven-minute flight from Blackpool.

The planes piloted by daredevil RAF personnel were on their way back from the Isle of Man where they performed at the Super Manx Bank Holiday Weekend, billed to 'put a smile back on Manx faces' after 18 months of the pandemic.

They have a prominent place in British popular culture, with their aerobatic displays a fixture of British summer events.

The badge of the Red Arrows shows the aircraft in their trademark diamond nine formation, with the motto Éclat, a French word meaning "brilliance" or "excellence".
