Red Arrows pilot treated in hospital after jets collide in mid-air

A Red Arrows pilot was taken to hospital after two jets from the RAF aerobatics team collided mid-air during a training exercise in Crete today.

One pilot dislocated his collarbone after ejecting from his Hawk jet, while the other was unhurt after managing to make an emergency landing.

The Foreign Office said the accident happened as the Red Arrows practised mid-air stunts prior to a series of displays due to take place later this year.

A spokesman said: "We can confirm that an incident has occurred involving the Red Arrows whilst undertaking pre-season training at Hellenic air force base Kastelli, in Crete.

"One pilot ejected and has been taken to hospital, and the other one landed safely."

An RAF spokesman was unable to confirm any further details of the accident, but said an investigation into the cause had begun.

The Red Arrows, set up in 1965, arrived on the Greek island on Sunday for the first stage of Exercise Springhawk after travelling from Scampton, Lincolnshire, on Saturday.

Since its formation, the unit has completed more than 4,000 displays in 53 countries.

According to its website, many Red Arrows pilots and support staff have been involved in fighting in Afghanistan and Iraq.
