Red Arrows: Commonwealth Games flight path route, timings and how to watch

The Red Arrows will fly over Birmingham today to celebrate the opening of the Commonwealth Games.

The opening ceremony will take place at Birmingham’s Alexander Stadium this evening ahead of 11 days of sporting competition.

During the Commonwealth Games opening ceremony, the athletes will take part in the Parade of Nations, and the Queen’s baton relay will reach its finale, after traveling 90,000 miles around every Commonwealth nation and territory.

The RAF will mark the occasion by sending the Red Arrows out on a flypast from their base in Scampton.

Find out below the route they’re taking and how you can catch a glimpse.

What are the Red Arrows and where are they based?

The Red Arrows is the Royal Air Force’s Aerobatic Team. They represent the “speed, agility, and precision” of the RAF, and act as the “public face of the service.”

The pilots fly Hawk fast-jets, often in their trademark Diamond Nine shape, with a combination of “close formations and precision flying.”

The Red Arrows have been displayed since 1965, and all Red Arrows pilots have flown operationally. The team is based in Scampton in Lincolnshire.
